Benji - From Toddler to Senior on The Beaches of the OBX

One of the greatest blessings of being an Outer Banks photographer is getting to watch friends grow over the years. Sometimes I meet children when they're just babies, photograph them year after year, and before I know it, they're standing in front of my camera for their senior portraits.

That was exactly the case with Benji.

Our families have been close friends for many years, and I've had the privilege of watching him grow from an energetic little toddler into an outstanding young man. His family moved away from the Outer Banks several years ago, but we have never been more than a phone call away. When they asked if I would photograph Benji's senior session, there wasn't a moment of hesitation. It was an honor.

Senior sessions are always unique because they tell a story about who someone is right now. Benji brought plenty of personality to the beach. We captured everything from classic portraits along the shoreline and dunes to dramatic images with the surf rolling in behind him. Dad even brought along his skimboard, which added a personal touch and reflected one of the things he loves most about spending time on the beach.

One of my favorite parts of the evening came when we recreated a tradition we've done over the years. Every time I've photographed Benji, I've had him run straight toward my camera through the surf. Looking back through those images is like flipping through a timeline of his life. From an excited little boy with a huge grin to a confident young man sprinting through the waves, it's amazing how quickly the years have passed. In his final photo, at long last, the wave finally caught him.

We also had the opportunity to capture a few photographs with his grandparents and even a few with his girlfriend, making this session about much more than graduation. These are the kinds of photographs that will only become more meaningful as the years go by.

Benji, I couldn't be prouder of the young man you've become. Thank you for letting me be a small part of your story over all these years. I hope wherever life takes you after graduation, you'll always remember these evenings on the Outer Banks, where so many great memories began. Never forget... Home will always be, where your heart is.
