The Sheehan Family - Nags Head Family Photographer

One of the best parts of photographing families on the Outer Banks is getting to watch traditions continue year after year. The Sheehan family has been coming to me for a long time, and this summer was especially fun because I had the chance to photograph one side of their family during their vacation in Nags Head. I'll be sharing the other side of the family in a separate blog soon.

This session had everything I enjoy about large family photography. There were grandparents surrounded by their children and grandchildren, couples who are building families of their own, energetic kids, a sweet little redheaded baby stealing everyone's attention, and plenty of laughter from beginning to end. With a group this size, it's always important to create the classic portraits everyone wants while also making time for each individual family. That way everyone leaves with images that feel personal as well as a photograph that captures the entire family together.

I especially loved seeing the different generations interact throughout the evening. The grandparents had a chance to be photographed with every grandchild, siblings gathered together for fun portraits, and each family received their own set of photographs. Those smaller moments often become just as meaningful as the big group portrait because they tell the story of each branch of the family.

The younger kids were fantastic, and the little one was an absolute star. From sitting happily in the sand to smiling while everyone gathered around, she made every portrait feel effortless. It was also fun to watch the older cousins jump into photos together, proving that no matter how old everyone gets, family vacations on the Outer Banks are still about spending time together.

As the evening moved toward magic hour, the soft light across the dunes gave us beautiful colors and created the perfect backdrop for their portraits. Nags Head always offers such a timeless beach setting, and it was a wonderful location for documenting another chapter in the Sheehan family's story.
