One of my favorite parts of photographing returning families is seeing how everyone has grown from one visit to the next. I had the pleasure of meeting up with the Carlson family again in Duck for another evening of Outer Banks family photography, and this session was every bit as much fun as I remembered.
This wonderful family of seven included Mom, Dad, their three daughters, their son, and now a son-in-law. It's always exciting when families return year after year because each visit marks another chapter in their story. Watching families grow is one of the greatest privileges of my job.
We met in Duck during the beautiful evening light, beginning our session with classic family portraits among the dunes before making our way to the shoreline. Once we finished the traditional photographs everyone wanted for the wall, their personalities really began to shine.
The Carlson family completely embraced the fun side of the session. They turned into fashion models, superheroes, action stars, and comedians all within a few minutes. The siblings struck dramatic poses that looked straight out of a magazine, the guys gave me their best "Blue Steel" impressions, and before long the entire family was flexing their muscles and laughing so hard they could barely stay in character. Those playful moments are often the photographs families end up talking about for years.
Of course, we also made time for the quieter moments. Mom and Dad shared a few beautiful portraits together while the ocean rolled in behind them, and each of the kids had an opportunity for individual portraits that captured their own unique personalities. The combination of timeless portraits and genuine laughter made this one of those sessions that perfectly reflects what an Outer Banks family vacation is all about.
Thank you again, Carlson family, for trusting me with another chapter of your family's story. I always enjoy seeing familiar faces in Duck, and I already can't wait to see what kind of fun we'll create the next time you're back on the Outer Banks.
