The Ruger Family – A Cooler Evening for Family Photos in Corolla

Sometimes getting the best Outer Banks family photos means being willing to change the plan.

The Ruger family was new to me this year, and their Corolla family photography session ended up moving to a different day during their vacation. We also pushed the session later in the evening because the heat had been pretty intense that week. When you're bringing a large family together, especially with a couple of very little ones, keeping everyone comfortable can make a huge difference.

Thankfully, our changes paid off.

By the time we met on the beach in Corolla, the temperature had cooled down and we had a beautiful evening to work with. We started around the dunes and sea grass, giving us a chance to photograph the entire family as well as the individual families, grandparents with the little ones, couples, siblings, and plenty of other combinations.

And those two little guys definitely had a starring role. Getting two babies to cooperate with a photographer's plans is always a bit of an adventure, but that's part of what makes these sessions fun. You work with whatever they give you and sometimes those unscripted moments become the photographs everyone loves most.

As the light softened, we moved closer to the ocean. The pastel evening sky and cooler temperatures gave us a great finish to the session, and by then everyone was relaxed enough to have a little fun. Some of my favorite images from the night are the ones where the grown kids stopped worrying about posing and just started being themselves.

That's one reason I'm always willing to adjust an Outer Banks family photography session when the weather calls for it. Vacation schedules can be complicated, but heat, wind, rain and light all play a part in what we can create. Sometimes moving a session by a day or even an hour is all it takes to turn a difficult evening into a great one.

For my first time photographing the Ruger family, I'd say this one worked out pretty darn well.
