One thing I've learned after years of photographing families on the Outer Banks is that the weather doesn't always cooperate, but with a little flexibility, everything usually works out.
The Schroeder family is one of my wonderful returning families, and just like another session earlier that day, we decided to move our photo shoot up a few hours to stay ahead of the approaching rain. We met at Lillian Street in Kitty Hawk, and the timing couldn't have been better. The skies stayed soft and bright, giving us beautiful light while we enjoyed the beach before the weather rolled in.
One of my favorite parts of photographing repeat clients is watching families grow over the years. It's always fun catching up, seeing how much the kids have changed, and creating another chapter in their family's story. This session had three generations together, making it even more meaningful. We captured plenty of photographs of the entire family, smaller family groups, grandparents with their grandchildren, and of course all of the cousins together.
The teenage boys brought plenty of personality to the evening. Whether they were piling together for a portrait, carrying one another across the beach, or laughing between poses, they made the session feel relaxed and genuine. Those unscripted moments often become everyone's favorite photographs because they show the relationships exactly as they are.
I also loved spending time photographing the grandparents with their grandsons. Those portraits always carry a little extra significance. While the kids may remember the vacation, these photographs become lasting reminders of the time they shared together on the beaches of Kitty Hawk.
The overcast skies gave us soft, even light all evening, and by finishing early, we packed everything up just before the weather arrived. Sometimes changing the schedule by a couple of hours makes all the difference.
Thank you again to the Schroeder family for inviting me back for another Outer Banks family photography session. It's always an honor when families continue to trust me with preserving these memories, and I already look forward to seeing everyone again on a future trip to the beach.
If you're planning an Outer Banks vacation and looking for an experienced Outer Banks family photographer, I'd love to help create timeless portraits of your family. Whether we're photographing your session in Kitty Hawk, Duck, Southern Shores, Corolla, Kill Devil Hills, or Nags Head, we'll work with whatever the weather brings to create photographs you'll enjoy for generations.
