There is something special about photographing young families during this season of life. Children grow and change so quickly that every vacation feels a little different from the one before it. Those little smiles, tiny hands, and playful personalities won't stay little for long, which makes preserving this chapter all the more meaningful.
I had the pleasure of photographing the Walshak family at the beautiful Whalehead Club in Corolla before we made our way to the beach for the rest of their session. With three young children, we scheduled an earlier 5:15 p.m. session so their youngest daughter would still be happy and full of energy. It turned out to be the perfect decision.
The skies remained comfortably overcast throughout the evening, keeping the temperatures surprisingly pleasant for July on the Outer Banks. Soft cloud cover is always a welcome sight because it creates beautiful, even light while allowing families to relax without the bright summer sun overhead.
The Whalehead Club grounds provided a wonderful backdrop to begin the evening, with views of the Currituck Lighthouse, peaceful water, and beautiful green spaces. Afterward, we headed to the beach where the kids had plenty of room to laugh, explore, and simply enjoy being together. Some of my favorite photographs from the evening were the simple ones. Their oldest daughter flashing a huge smile at the camera, their son proudly showing off his sandy hands, and their youngest happily riding in Dad's arms before the family gathered together along the shoreline.
One of my favorite images from the session came at the very end as the family stood hand in hand facing the Atlantic Ocean. It is such a simple photograph, but one that perfectly captures what family vacations are really about: spending time together and making memories that will last long after the sand has been washed away.
Thank you, Walshak family, for trusting me to capture this season of your lives. It was a pleasure spending the evening with your family, and I hope these photographs become treasured reminders of your time together on the Outer Banks for many years to come.
