Deihm and Rittenhouse Family – An Avon Family Beach Session

There is something I really enjoy about photographing extended families on the Outer Banks. Vacations bring everyone together in one place, and a family portrait gives you something from that week that lasts a whole lot longer than the sand in the car.

I met the Deihm Rittenhouse family in Avon for their family photography session, and we had a beautiful evening for it. We started among the sand dunes and sea oats, where the softer evening light gave us a great backdrop for the entire family before breaking things down into the smaller family groups.

With several generations together, I always try to make sure we get more than just the big group photograph. Those smaller combinations matter. Parents with their kids, grandparents with grandchildren, siblings and cousins all become part of the story of the family at this particular moment in time.

And with kids in the mix, there is always plenty of personality.

Once we finished in the dunes, we headed toward the ocean for a few more photographs along the shoreline. Avon is one of my favorite places for Outer Banks family photography because you can get two completely different looks within a short walk. The dunes and beach grass give us that unmistakable Hatteras Island feel, while the Atlantic gives us the classic OBX beach portraits families come here hoping to take home.

We finished with the whole family standing together and looking out over the ocean. I love photographs like that. You don't need everyone looking at the camera for an image to say something about a family. Sometimes simply seeing everyone together in one place tells the story perfectly.

Family vacations come and go quickly, especially on the Outer Banks. Having everyone together in Avon, NC gave the Deihm Rittenhouse family a perfect opportunity to stop for an evening and preserve a little piece of this one.
