Parrish Family - A Beautiful Cloudy Evening in Corolla

One thing I've learned after years of photographing families on the Outer Banks is that perfect weather isn't what makes beautiful photographs. Sometimes the most memorable sessions happen when we're watching the forecast, hoping the next rain shower holds off just a little longer.

That was exactly the case with the Parrish family during their vacation in Corolla.

This week has been one of the wettest stretches of the summer. Between passing rain showers, dark clouds, and constantly checking the radar, every evening has required a little flexibility. Thankfully, the weather gave us just enough of a break to spend time together on the beach before the next round of rain rolled through.

The reward was incredible.

Instead of harsh sunshine, the clouds created soft, even light that made every portrait look natural and timeless. The ocean became calm, the colors stayed gentle, and the evening felt peaceful despite everything Mother Nature had been throwing our way all week.

With thirteen family members gathered together, we captured the classic full family portrait before spending time with each individual family and plenty of combinations in between. One of my favorite moments came when all of the grandchildren surrounded Grandma with hugs. It was one of those completely genuine moments that reminds me why family photography is about so much more than simply smiling at the camera.

Of course, every family has its own personality, and the Parrish family certainly didn't disappoint. Before we wrapped up, the ladies decided it was time for a fun photo together, complete with dramatic poses and lots of laughter. Those are often the images that become family favorites because they capture everyone's personalities just as much as they capture their faces.

Even with rain clouds nearby, the evening turned into a wonderful reminder that vacations aren't remembered because the weather was perfect. They're remembered because the people were together.

That's one of the reasons I always encourage families not to panic when they see clouds in the forecast. Some of my favorite Outer Banks family photography sessions have happened under skies just like these.

If you're planning a family vacation in Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, or Nags Head, don't let an uncertain forecast keep you from scheduling your portraits. Sometimes the clouds create the most beautiful light of the entire week.
