There are some places on the Outer Banks that never get old, and the beaches at the southern end of Hatteras Island are high on that list. This was my first time meeting the Rigoglioso, Parks, and Lambert families, and they chose one of my favorite locations, just north of the Ocracoke Ferry. It is a bit of a drive from the northern beaches, but every time I make the trip, I'm reminded why it's worth it.
The light at the southern end of Hatteras is simply incredible. Because of the angle of the shoreline, the evening sun wraps beautifully around everyone instead of shining directly into their faces. It creates soft, flattering light that makes family portraits look effortless, and this session was a perfect example.
We had nine family members together, including grandparents, adult children, grandchildren, and a beautiful teenage granddaughter. Everyone came ready to have fun, making it easy to move through the full family portrait, individual families, grandparents with the grandkids, sibling portraits, and plenty of individual photos along the way.
One of my favorite moments came when the boys decided it was time to let their personalities shine. The serious expressions quickly disappeared, replaced by goofy faces, superhero poses, and enough laughter to keep everyone smiling. Those little moments often become some of the family's favorite photographs because they capture who everyone really is.
I also enjoyed spending a few extra minutes photographing each of the grandchildren individually. From playful grins to thoughtful portraits, every child brought something completely different to the camera. Those individual portraits are often the ones that parents end up enlarging for the walls at home.
As the evening came to a close, the family surprised me by changing into matching t-shirts for one final photograph facing the Atlantic Ocean. With the waves rolling in behind them and the moon already hanging in the evening sky, it created a quiet ending to a wonderful session and one of my favorite images from the night.
Thank you, Rigoglioso, Parks, and Lambert families, for inviting me to the southern end of Hatteras Island to capture your vacation memories. It was a pleasure meeting all of you, and I hope these photographs always remind you of your time together on the Outer Banks.
If you're planning a vacation in Hatteras, Ocracoke, Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, or Nags Head, I'd love to help you preserve your family's memories with a relaxed Outer Banks family photography session. Every beach has its own personality, and the southern beaches of Hatteras continue to be one of my favorite places to photograph families.
