Bigus Berry Family - Corolla Family Photography at the Currituck

One of the best parts of being an Outer Banks family photographer is getting to meet new families through the kind words of past clients. The Bigus and Berry family found me through a family friend's recommendation, and I had the pleasure of meeting all twelve of them in Corolla, just across from the iconic Currituck Beach Lighthouse.

Because there were several young children in the group, we scheduled this session a little earlier than my typical Magic Hour start time. Beginning around 5:00 PM helped the little ones stay happy, energetic, and ready to smile. While earlier sessions sometimes make photographers nervous, this evening reminded me that every session is different. An overcast sky rolled in just in time, giving us beautifully soft light from beginning to end. Add in a gentle breeze coming off the Atlantic, and the weather couldn't have been better.

This wonderful family included grandparents, two families, five grandchildren, and one very photogenic toddler who quickly stole the show. He proudly carried his little crocheted football through the entire session, and it became one of my favorite little details from the evening. Sometimes the smallest props end up telling the biggest stories years later.

I always enjoy photographing the different generations together. There is something special about capturing grandparents surrounded by their grandchildren, knowing those photographs will only become more meaningful as the years pass. We also made time for each individual family, sibling portraits, and plenty of individual photographs of the kids. With three older children and several younger ones, there was no shortage of personalities, smiles, and laughter throughout the evening.

One thing I especially loved about this session was how relaxed everyone remained. The breeze kept everyone comfortable, the soft light made every portrait look beautiful, and the younger children stayed engaged from start to finish. Sessions like this are a great reminder that perfect weather doesn't always mean bright sunshine. Sometimes a blanket of clouds creates some of the most flattering conditions you could ask for.
