One of my favorite parts of being an Outer Banks family photographer is getting to watch multiple generations come together during a beach vacation. The Angell Family's session in Kitty Hawk was a perfect example of why these gatherings are so special.
This family of ten included two grandparents, their two children and spouses, and four energetic grandchildren. With everyone together on the beach, there was no shortage of laughter, hugs, and moments that reminded me why family photography matters so much.
We met in Kitty Hawk during Magic Hour, that beautiful stretch of time just before sunset when the light becomes soft and golden. The ocean was putting on a show with rolling waves, and the sky gave us the perfect backdrop for capturing memories that will be enjoyed for years to come.
One thing that immediately stood out was how connected everyone was. The grandparents were clearly soaking up every moment with their grandchildren, and it was easy to see how much love exists throughout the entire family. Whether it was the little ones laughing with their parents or everyone gathering together for a giant group hug, the evening felt relaxed and genuine from start to finish.
The grandchildren brought plenty of personality to the session. They were full of smiles, energy, and enthusiasm, which always makes for fun photographs. Some of my favorite images from the evening were the candid moments where everyone simply enjoyed being together. Those are often the photographs that families treasure most years later.
I also love when extended family sessions allow me to create a variety of combinations. We captured the entire family together, grandparents with grandchildren, each individual family unit, sibling groups, and plenty of candid interactions in between. Those different combinations help tell the complete story of a family vacation on the Outer Banks.
One of the highlights of the evening was watching the grandparents interact with the grandkids. There is something special about photographing those relationships. The smiles come naturally, the laughter is genuine, and the photographs often become some of the most meaningful images from the session.
The beach itself provided a beautiful setting for the Angell Family. Kitty Hawk offers a classic Outer Banks backdrop with wide beaches, soft sand, and endless ocean views. Combined with the soft evening light, it created the perfect environment for relaxed family portraits that feel timeless.
As the sun continued to dip lower in the sky, the family became even more comfortable in front of the camera. By the end of the session, everyone was laughing, joking, and simply enjoying their time together. Those are always the sessions that produce the most authentic photographs.
I am incredibly thankful the Angell Family trusted me to capture this chapter of their family story during their Outer Banks vacation. These are the moments that become treasured memories long after the trip is over.
If you're planning an Outer Banks vacation and would like to preserve your family's memories with professional photographs, I'd love to help create images that your family will enjoy for generations.
