The Baroody Family - A Perfect Afternoon in Nags Head

One of the things I love most about photographing families on the Outer Banks is that every session is different. Sometimes the best light comes right before sunset, and other times the best choice is to work around little ones instead of the sun. That was exactly the case with the Baroody Family during their Outer Banks family photography session in Nags Head.

With Mom, Dad, and their three children, we decided on a 4:30 PM session to make sure their youngest was happy, rested, and nowhere near bedtime. While it wasn't quite Magic Hour, getting a smiling, energetic toddler is almost always the better trade. Happy kids make beautiful family photos, and this session proved exactly why.

The afternoon gave us bright blue skies, gentle waves, and plenty of room for the kids to explore the beach. Their oldest proudly helped with his younger sisters, while the girls were full of smiles and curiosity from the moment we stepped onto the sand. One little explorer especially enjoyed being tossed into the air by Dad, and judging by her grin, she would have happily done that all evening.

I also loved taking a few quiet moments with Mom and Dad. Between chasing little feet across the beach, we captured some beautiful portraits of just the two of them, a reminder that family portraits are just as much about preserving their relationship as they are documenting their children.

Some of my favorite images from the evening came during a simple walk along the shoreline. Watching the five of them stroll hand in hand toward the ocean is exactly the kind of photograph that becomes more meaningful with every passing year. Those little hands won't stay little forever.
