Some family vacations are organized by grandparents. Others come together because siblings decide it's time to gather everyone in one place. The Bowman family was the latter, as a brother and sister brought their families together for a week on the Outer Banks, making it the perfect opportunity for updated family portraits in Kill Devil Hills (KDH).
We met on the beach in Kill Devil Hills for an evening session, and while a layer of ocean haze softened the horizon, it created beautiful, even light that was perfect for portraits. Sometimes the weather gives us dramatic sunsets, and other times it gives us soft, natural light that lets every smile become the focus. This evening definitely fell into the second category.
The group included two families with grown children, making it easy to capture a wonderful variety of combinations. We photographed everyone together, each immediate family, the brother and sister with their families, parents with their children, and individual portraits. Having older kids always allows us to move through the session efficiently while still leaving plenty of time for relaxed moments and genuine conversations.
Of course, there was one family member who quickly became the star of the evening.
Their adorable corgi, Hashbrown, was impossible to ignore. Dressed in a little bandana and proudly wearing a harness with his name across the side, he happily posed for photos and managed to steal attention almost every time he wandered into the frame. I always enjoy when families bring their dogs to a session, and Hashbrown certainly made this one even more memorable.
Despite the hazy conditions over the Atlantic, the beach gave us a calm, timeless backdrop that highlighted what mattered most: a family spending quality time together while making new memories during their Outer Banks vacation. Those are the moments that photographs preserve long after the trip is over.
Thank you, Bowman family, for trusting me to capture your time together in Kill Devil Hills. I hope these photographs bring back memories of your vacation, plenty of laughs about Hashbrown's performance in front of the camera, and remind you how special it is when family can gather in one place.
If you're planning an Outer Banks family vacation and would like to schedule your own Kill Devil Hills family photography session, I'd love to help you preserve those memories with photographs you'll enjoy for years to come. Whether you're staying in KDH, Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Duck, or Corolla, an evening on the beach is the perfect time to create lasting family portraits.
