One of my favorite things about photographing families on the Outer Banks is seeing multiple generations come together for a week they'll remember for years. The Greene family met me just across from the Whalehead Club in Corolla for an evening of family portraits, and despite all the rain earlier in the week, the beach had recovered beautifully.
The sunshine returned just in time, giving us a perfect summer evening along the shoreline. The dunes were looking great, the ocean was sparkling, and everyone was excited to finally get out on the beach together.
The Greene family included three generations, making this one of those sessions where I had the opportunity to photograph just about every combination imaginable. We captured the entire family together, each individual family, the grandparents with their grandchildren, siblings, couples, and plenty of individual portraits along the way. Those combinations become some of the most meaningful photographs years down the road.
One of my favorite moments came as everyone relaxed into the session. The kids began laughing, the adults followed their lead, and before long the smiles stopped feeling posed and started feeling completely natural. Those are always my favorite photographs because they reflect what the evening actually felt like.
The beach across from the Whalehead Club continues to be one of my favorite locations for Outer Banks family photography. Between the beautiful dunes, wide beach, and easy access, it creates the perfect setting for timeless family portraits while still giving everyone room to relax and enjoy their vacation together.
If you're planning a trip to Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, or Nags Head, I'd love to help capture your family's time together. Some of the best memories come from simply gathering everyone in one place and letting the evening unfold.
