The Johnson Family - When the Forecast Doesn't Cooperate, Family Still Comes First

If there's one thing I've learned as an Outer Banks family photographer, it's that weather forecasts are often just a suggestion. The Johnson family's session in Nags Head was the perfect example.

The day before their session brought steady rain, and the forecast insisted we were in for another wet evening. We kept watching the radar, hoping for a break, and thankfully one arrived just in time. The skies stayed dramatic with thick clouds rolling over the Atlantic, but the rain held off long enough for us to enjoy a wonderful evening on the beach.

This family had a unique makeup that made the session especially fun. Three sisters gathered for their vacation, along with two brothers. The families are connected through the marriage of one of the brothers to one of the sisters, and together they have two adorable little boys who quickly became the stars of the evening. One of the sisters also brought her boyfriend along, making it a wonderful mix of family and loved ones spending time together on the Outer Banks.

As is often the case with young children, we discovered almost immediately that the youngest little guy wasn't interested in posing. He was simply hungry. Rather than fighting it or trying to rush through, we paused, let him have a quick snack, and before long he was smiling, exploring, and happily running across the sand.

That's one of the biggest lessons I've learned over the years photographing families on the Outer Banks. The best sessions aren't the ones where everything goes perfectly. They're the ones where everyone relaxes, adapts, and lets the evening unfold naturally.

Once our youngest explorer had a full tummy, the session really came alive. We captured the entire family together, plenty of sibling photos, the two brothers together, the three sisters sharing laughs, individual family portraits, and lots of playful moments throughout the evening. One of my favorite moments came when the little guy decided it was time to take off running down the beach with the biggest smile on his face. Those spontaneous moments often become the photographs families treasure most.

The overcast sky turned out to be a blessing. Instead of harsh sunlight, we were treated to soft, even light that made everyone's expressions the focus of every portrait. The lavender and neutral color palette the family chose worked beautifully against the moody skies and soft tones of the Atlantic, creating timeless portraits that perfectly matched the atmosphere.

One thing I especially enjoyed about this session was how naturally everyone interacted. There was plenty of laughter between the sisters, the brothers enjoyed joking with one another, and everyone embraced the unpredictability that comes with photographing little children. Those genuine interactions always make for the best photographs.

Rain may have dominated the forecast, but it never became part of the story. Instead, the evening became a reminder that sometimes patience is all you need. A little flexibility, a quick snack break, and a family willing to enjoy whatever the Outer Banks has to offer can turn an uncertain forecast into beautiful memories.

Whether you're vacationing in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Duck, Corolla, or anywhere along the Outer Banks, don't let the weather report scare you away from scheduling family portraits. Some of my favorite sessions have happened on evenings that looked questionable just a few hours before. The Johnson family proved once again that great memories aren't made by perfect forecasts. They're made by families simply enjoying time together on the beach.
