The Perez Family - Finding Calm in the Wind on the Outer Banks

Some evenings remind me why flexibility is one of the most valuable parts of being an Outer Banks family photographer. The Perez family arrived for their session on the same evening we had been battling relentless winds throughout the day. Gusts were reaching nearly 32 mph, but instead of calling it quits, we adjusted the plan and let the weather work for us.

We began at the Bodie Island Lighthouse, taking advantage of the line of trees that sheltered us from the strongest wind. Just a few yards away the grass was whipping in the breeze, but tucked beside the trees it became surprisingly calm. That gave us the perfect opportunity to photograph this wonderful three-generation family before heading over to Coquina Beach to finish the evening in the soft golden light.

The Perez family brought sixteen family members, including proud grandparents, adult children, grandchildren, an adorable baby, and even two very photogenic dogs who happily joined the family portraits. I always encourage families to include their pets whenever possible because they're just as much a part of the family story. These two certainly earned their place in the photographs.

One of my favorite things about this session was seeing every generation interact with the newest member of the family. The baby quickly became the center of attention, moving from one set of loving arms to another while everyone smiled, laughed, and celebrated being together on the Outer Banks. Those quiet moments between parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, are the memories that grow more valuable every year.

After finishing at the lighthouse, we made our way to Coquina Beach, where the dunes helped block the remaining wind and the evening light turned beautifully warm. We captured individual family portraits, playful group photographs, and one giant family cuddle that somehow included nearly everyone, plus one of the dogs happily peeking into the frame. Those relaxed, joy-filled moments are often the photographs families tell me become their favorites.

The weather could have easily become the story that evening, but instead it became a reminder that knowing the Outer Banks well makes all the difference. Sometimes the best locations aren't chosen because they're famous, but because they offer just enough protection from the elements to let everyone relax and enjoy the experience.

Whether your family is visiting Bodie Island Lighthouse, Coquina Beach, Nags Head, or anywhere else along the Outer Banks, my goal is always the same: create timeless portraits while making the experience enjoyable, no matter what the forecast has planned. On evenings like this one, a little flexibility, a beautiful sunset, and a family ready to have fun are all it takes to create memories that will last a lifetime.
