The Kellar Family - Wind and Flexibility at Bodie Island Lighthouse

If there's one thing I've learned after years of photographing families on the Outer Banks, it's that the weather always gets a vote. The day after photographing another family while dodging rain, I met the Kellar family for their Outer Banks family photography session. This time, rain wasn't the problem. The wind was.

Steady winds were gusting close to 32 mph, which can make a beach portrait session feel almost impossible. Rather than fighting the weather, we changed our plan. We began at the Bodie Island Lighthouse, using the line of trees to shield us from the strongest gusts. It turned out to be exactly what we needed. While the open field was incredibly windy, the trees created a calm pocket where everyone could relax, hair stayed in place, and we were able to create beautiful portraits with one of the most iconic Outer Banks landmarks standing behind them.

The Kellar family included eight family members across three generations, giving us plenty of opportunities to photograph the entire family together as well as each individual family. One of my favorite moments came when the grandparents shared an unexpected kiss while everyone else looked on laughing. Those genuine reactions are impossible to script, and they're often the photographs families treasure the most years later.

The grandchildren were wonderful to work with. The older granddaughter was a natural in front of the camera, while her younger brother brought plenty of personality and smiles to every pose. Their parents and extended family kept the atmosphere relaxed and fun, making the entire session feel more like an evening together than a formal photo shoot.

Once we finished at the lighthouse, we headed over to Coquina Beach to catch the softer evening light. By then, the dunes helped block what wind was left, giving us another beautiful setting to finish the session. Between the sea oats, warm light, and peaceful beach, it was hard to believe we had started the evening wondering if the weather would cooperate at all.

One of the things I love most about photographing families throughout Nags Head, Bodie Island, Coquina Beach, Corolla, Duck, Kitty Hawk, and the rest of the Outer Banks is that every session is different. Sometimes success comes from perfect weather. Other times, it's simply knowing where to go when the weather has other plans. The Kellar family's session was a perfect reminder that a little flexibility can turn a challenging forecast into a gallery full of memories.
