The Henrick Family - Chasing Golden Hour in Nags Head

Some evenings make you work for every photograph, and those often become the most memorable sessions. The Henrick family joined me in Nags Head for a beautiful Outer Banks family photography session during golden hour, with the same scattered rain clouds that had followed us throughout the day.

Because the sand near the dunes was still soaked from earlier showers, we started the session along the water's edge where the beach was firm enough for everyone to gather comfortably. It turned out to be the perfect decision. The soft evening light reflecting off the ocean gave us beautiful skin tones, while the dramatic clouds created a stunning backdrop without ever stealing the attention from the family.

This was a large gathering with 20 family members spanning three generations, making it a wonderful opportunity to capture both the full family together and each individual family. I always encourage these smaller groupings because they're often the portraits that end up framed in homes long after vacation has ended.

One of the highlights of the evening was watching the cousins interact. The younger girls had everyone laughing with their big smiles and playful personalities, while the boys quickly turned an ordinary portrait into an impromptu "strongest muscles" competition. Those unscripted moments are often the ones families remember most, and they always add a little extra personality to the gallery.

As the evening continued and the beach began to dry, we made our way to the dunes for the remainder of the session. The sea oats and soft sand created a classic Outer Banks backdrop, while the clouds that had threatened rain all evening simply added texture and color to the sky. Sometimes the best sunsets aren't filled with bright oranges at all. Instead, they're calm, soft, and perfect for timeless family portraits.

If you're planning a vacation in Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Duck, Corolla, Southern Shores, or anywhere on the Outer Banks, I'd love to help you preserve your family's time together. Whether we're racing a passing rain shower or enjoying a perfect golden hour, there's always a way to create photographs that will bring you back to your beach vacation for years to come.
