The Kofmehl Family - Dodging the Rain in Nags Head

One of the things I love most about photographing families on the Outer Banks is that no two sessions are ever the same. Some evenings are filled with glowing sunshine, while others require keeping one eye on the camera and the other on the weather radar.

The Kofmehl family met me in Nags Head for their Outer Banks family photography session on a beautiful but unpredictable afternoon. Low clouds rolled overhead, and scattered rain showers kept drifting across the beach. Fortunately, we were able to stay one step ahead of the weather and enjoy soft, even light for the entire session.

This family included two smaller families, the grandparents, and four energetic grandchildren, making for a wonderful mix of generations and personalities. The overcast sky gave us perfect portrait light, and the kids wasted no time showing off their smiles and keeping everyone laughing.

One of my favorite moments came as we photographed each of the grandchildren individually. Every child brought a completely different personality in front of the camera, from big confident smiles to quiet expressions, making each portrait unique. The youngest grandchild especially seemed to enjoy being lifted high into the air, and those genuine giggles always make for some of my favorite photographs.

Before wrapping up, we walked over to the dunes for a few relaxed family portraits away from the shoreline. The clouds created a dramatic backdrop, and just as we finished the last photographs, the rain finally began to move closer. Sometimes good timing is just as important as good light.
