The Holcombe Family - Rain Clouds, Grandparents, and Beautiful Beach Portraits in Duck

One of the questions I get asked most often is, "What happens if the weather doesn't cooperate?"

The Holcombe family session in Duck, North Carolina is a perfect example of why I always encourage families not to give up too early.

When we arrived, the sky was completely overcast with rain clouds surrounding us on almost every side. It certainly didn't look like the typical colorful sunset people imagine when they think of the Outer Banks. But overcast evenings have a beauty all their own. The clouds acted like one giant softbox, giving us beautiful light that looked every bit as flattering as magic hour, without the harsh shadows or squinting.

Three generations gathered for their Outer Banks family photography session, and we made the most of every minute we had before the weather changed. We photographed the entire family together, spent time with the grandparents and grandchildren, captured each individual family, and even had the opportunity to create individual portraits of the older grandchildren along the shoreline.

One of my favorite images from the evening is the portrait of Grandma and Grandpa together. After all these years together, there was an effortless warmth between them that made the photograph feel completely natural. Moments like those are one of the reasons I love photographing extended families. Every generation brings a different story to the session.

The younger grandchildren kept everyone smiling, and despite the threatening skies, the beach stayed quiet enough that we never felt rushed. Sometimes the forecast looks intimidating, but if we can find even a small window between the showers, we're rewarded with some of the softest, most beautiful light imaginable.

If you're planning a vacation in Duck, Corolla, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, or anywhere on the Outer Banks, don't let an overcast forecast discourage you. Some of my favorite Outer Banks family photography sessions have happened under cloudy skies, and the Holcombe family is proof that beautiful memories don't require a perfect sunset. Sometimes they just require a little faith that the weather will cooperate long enough to make something special.
