The DiLuca Family - Three Generations and One Very Dapper Dog in Kitty Hawk

Summer vacations on the Outer Banks are about more than relaxing on the beach. They're about bringing family together.

The DiLuca family gathered in Kitty Hawk for an evening of Outer Banks family photography, bringing together grandparents, two families, grandchildren, and even one very handsome four-legged family member dressed for the occasion. Every family has its own personality, and this one was full of laughter, encouragement, and just enough adventure to keep things interesting.

Mother Nature certainly kept us on our toes. Rain clouds surrounded us for much of the evening, and we spent the session watching the weather just as closely as we watched everyone's smiles. Thankfully, the showers stayed away long enough for us to photograph every family combination they had planned.

One of the unexpected benefits of the cloudy skies was the incredible light. Although this session took place during Magic Hour Monday, the thick cloud cover softened the evening light even more, giving us beautiful skin tones and a peaceful backdrop along the shoreline. Sometimes the best lighting comes from conditions that seem less than ideal.

I always enjoy taking a few individual portraits during extended family sessions, and this evening was no exception. The older grandson was willing to have a little fun with some dramatic editorial-style poses, while the adults each had a chance to step in front of the camera for portraits of their own. Those extra few minutes often become some of a family's favorite images because they aren't something they expected to receive.

Of course, I couldn't leave out the family's dog, who arrived wearing a tiny tuxedo bandana and looked perfectly at home posing on the beach. Pets are family too, and I love when they're able to join an Outer Banks beach photography session.

By the end of the evening, the rain had held off, everyone had relaxed into the experience, and we had captured memories spanning three generations. That's one of the things I love most about photographing families in Kitty Hawk, Duck, Southern Shores, Corolla, Kill Devil Hills, and throughout the Outer Banks. Every session tells a different story, and sometimes the memories you make while dodging storm clouds become just as meaningful as the photographs themselves.
