The Woolley Family - A Soft Summer Afternoon in Kitty Hawk

An Outer Banks family portrait session does not need a dramatic sunset to feel special. The Woolley family met me in Kitty Hawk at 5:00 p.m. on an August afternoon, and the overcast sky gave us soft, flattering light that worked beautifully for their beach portraits.

With nine family members together, I made sure we captured the full group first, then created smaller combinations that gave everyone something personal to take home. The blue, white, and soft neutral colors they chose looked great against the sand, ocean, and gentle sky.

One of my favorite parts of a family session is watching the group settle in as we move through the portraits. The Woolleys brought easy smiles and a relaxed energy, whether they were standing together by the water or gathered more casually near the dunes. Those different settings gave their gallery a nice variety while keeping the focus where it belongs: on the people and the time they shared together.

That is what I love about Outer Banks family photography. A beach week can pass quickly, but photographs give you a way to hold onto the faces, personalities, and connections that made it meaningful. The big group portrait matters, and so do the smaller moments within it.
