The Hutton Family – From an Outer Banks Wedding to a Family of Four

One of the best parts of photographing weddings is getting the chance to see those couples again years later and discover where life has taken them.

I photographed the Huttons' Outer Banks wedding four years ago, and this past week they returned to the OBX for vacation. This time, though, there were two very important additions to the family: their two little daughters.

We met in Southern Shores for their family photography session and spent some time in the dunes before heading toward the beach. With two little ones, I always want to keep things relaxed. We got the traditional family portraits, but also gave the girls room to be themselves. Sandy toes, big smiles, cuddling up with Mom and Dad and all those little expressions that change way too quickly at this age.

There is something pretty special about photographing a couple on their wedding day and then, a few years later, having those same two people sitting in the sand with their children in their arms. Their wedding photographs captured the beginning of one chapter. These photographs get to show what came next.

And the Outer Banks decided to give us a memorable ending.

Rain started moving in toward the end of the session, but instead of ruining the evening, it gave us a rainbow over the dunes in Southern Shores. Sometimes you just have to roll with whatever the OBX weather decides to do, and every once in a while you're rewarded for it.

Four years ago, I photographed the Huttons as bride and groom.

This time, I got to photograph them as a family of four.

I really can't ask for much better than that.
