The Plank Family – Corolla Family Photography at the End of the Road

It is always fun when I see a familiar family pop back up on my schedule, and I have had the opportunity to photograph the Plank family several times over the years. This time we met in Corolla for another Outer Banks family photography session with Grandma, her son and daughter, their families, and four grandkids who have definitely grown since I've seen them last.

And when I say Corolla, I mean all the way up Corolla.

We were about as far north as you can drive on the paved road before reaching the 4x4 beach access. From our location you could even see the fence separating Corolla from the wild horse area of Carova. It is a beautiful part of the Outer Banks and has a completely different feel from many of the beaches farther south.

With three generations together, I wanted to make sure we photographed all of the combinations that make an extended family session important. We started with everyone together, then worked through each individual family, Grandma with her grandchildren, the couples, and of course the kids together. With four cousins ranging from little to teenager, there was plenty of personality to work with by the time I got them all together!

One thing I always try to keep in mind during an Outer Banks family session is that the beach isn't equally easy for everyone to navigate. Grandma wasn't really able to get down and sit in the dunes, so we simply adjusted what we were doing. There is no reason someone should have to struggle through a pose just because that was the original plan. We found comfortable spots for her and still created beautiful portraits with her children and grandchildren.

That's also one of the advantages of photographing families here year after year. I get to know them, watch the kids grow, and create something a little different each time they return to the Outer Banks.

It was wonderful having the Plank family back in front of my camera, and we couldn't have asked for a prettier evening at the very northern end of Corolla.
