The Sterling Family - Hatteras Island Family Photography

One of the things I enjoy most about photographing families on the Outer Banks is seeing multiple generations come together for a vacation. The Sterling Family gathered at the far southern end of Hatteras Island for an evening filled with laughter, hugs, and plenty of beautiful portraits.

This session included 11 family members spanning three generations. The grandparents were joined by their three children and their families. Together they brought four energetic grandchildren whose personalities kept everyone smiling from beginning to end.

The southern beaches of Hatteras have a character all their own. Wide stretches of sand, natural dunes, and a quieter atmosphere make them a wonderful location for Outer Banks family photography. The peaceful setting allowed us to take our time creating a variety of portraits without feeling rushed.

As always, we started with the entire family before working through each individual family group, grandparents with grandchildren, sibling portraits, and plenty of individual photographs. One of my favorite moments was watching the grandchildren gather around their grandparents for a close portrait filled with genuine smiles and affection. Those are often the photographs that become family treasures for years to come.

Each family also had time for their own portraits, giving parents an opportunity to update family photographs while the kids enjoyed exploring the beach between poses. I especially enjoyed capturing the personalities of each of the grandchildren. Some gave me big confident smiles, while others showed off a little extra personality that made their portraits uniquely their own.

As the evening came to a close and the sun disappeared beyond the dunes, everyone gathered together one last time for a relaxed group photo filled with laughter. Those unscripted moments often become the perfect ending to a family session because they reflect what an Outer Banks vacation is really about: spending time together.
