The Whetzel Family – Magic Hour in Kitty Hawk

One of the things I love most about being an Outer Banks family photographer is getting to meet families who bring their own personalities and interests into a session. The Whetzel Family's evening in Kitty Hawk was a perfect example of that.

We met during magic hour, when the soft evening light settles over the beach and creates the kind of glow photographers dream about. The weather cooperated beautifully, giving us calm conditions, gentle ocean colors, and a sky that seemed to get softer with every passing minute.

The Whetzel Family was made up of Mom, Dad, and their two daughters, and it became obvious very quickly that creativity runs in the family. Both daughters brought an artistic spirit to the session, and that opened the door for some incredibly fun and unique portraits throughout the evening.

Of course, we started with the family photographs everyone wants for their walls and albums. The family fit together naturally, making it easy to capture genuine smiles and relaxed moments. Their connection was obvious in every image, whether they were gathered together in the dunes or standing along the shoreline with the Atlantic Ocean stretching behind them.

As the session continued, the girls really began to shine. Their artistic personalities came through in every pose and expression. We created a mix of traditional portraits and more creative images that allowed them to showcase who they are. One daughter even treated us to a beautiful dance pose along the shoreline that felt perfectly at home against the backdrop of the ocean and evening sky.

Some of my favorite moments happened when everyone simply relaxed and enjoyed being together. The laughter between the sisters, the quiet moments with Mom and Dad, and the playful interactions throughout the evening created photographs that felt genuine rather than posed.

The beach access at Lillian Street gave us a wonderful variety of backgrounds, from the rolling dunes and sea oats to the shoreline itself. Every location seemed to highlight a different side of the family, allowing us to create a gallery with both classic family portraits and more artistic imagery.

By the time the session ended, the light had softened into those beautiful pastel tones that make Kitty Hawk such an incredible location for beach photography. It was the perfect ending to a session filled with creativity, laughter, and family connection.
