One of the things I love most about being an Outer Banks family photographer is getting the opportunity to photograph families who gather from all over the country for a single week together. The Woodward Family's session in the Corova 4x4 area was exactly that kind of evening.
With thirty-three family members, four sets of grandparents, and nine grandchildren, this was one of those sessions that takes a little planning, a lot of organization, and a family that is ready to have fun. We scheduled the session as close to golden hour as possible without running out of daylight, and the timing worked beautifully as the evening light settled across the dunes of Carova Beach.
The Woodward Family included four sets of grandparents, multiple family groups, and cousins who were excited to spend their vacation together on the Outer Banks. Large family sessions like this are always special because they bring together relatives who may not have the chance to see one another very often. When everyone gathers in one place, it creates the perfect opportunity to capture memories that will only become more valuable with time.
We started with the full family portrait, which is always an accomplishment with a group of thirty-three. Once everyone was in place, we worked through the various family combinations, making sure each branch of the family had their own portraits while still keeping the session moving. The grandchildren were wonderful, and despite the size of the group, everyone stayed relaxed and engaged throughout the evening.
One of my favorite parts of the session was photographing the grandparents with their grandchildren. Years from now, those images often become some of the most treasured photographs from a family vacation. Watching the different generations interact throughout the evening made it clear just how important this time together was for everyone involved.
Of course, every large family has its personalities, and the Woodward Family was no exception. By the end of the session, the formal portraits gave way to plenty of laughter, playful moments, and a few wonderfully chaotic group photos that perfectly captured the spirit of the family. Sometimes those unscripted moments tell the story even better than the posed portraits.
The dunes, sea oats, and wide-open beaches of the Corova 4x4 area provided the perfect backdrop for a family gathering of this size. The soft evening light and quiet northern beaches helped create portraits that feel both timeless and uniquely Outer Banks.
Thank you to the Woodward Family for trusting me to capture such an important gathering. It was an honor to photograph four sets of grandparents, nine grandchildren, and thirty-three family members together during your time in Corolla and the Corova 4x4 beaches.
