One of the things I love most about being an Outer Banks family photographer is that every session tells a completely different story. Sometimes it is a large extended family gathering together for vacation photos, and sometimes it is something quieter and deeply personal like this evening with the Lacey Family in Rodanthe.
This session was all about family, connection, and two very loved dogs enjoying the beach together.
Mom and daughter brought their puppies down to the Outer Banks for a beach portrait session during the evening Magic Hour in Rodanthe. Their 14-year-old husky completely stole my attention the moment we started. There is something incredibly special about photographing senior dogs, especially on the beach where they can relax, smell the salt air, and simply enjoy being present with the people who love them most.
Their younger pup, a four-year-old Bichpoo, brought a completely different energy to the session. Full speed zoomies across the sand, happy little expressions, and nonstop excitement made for some absolutely hilarious moments. Sessions with dogs always have a little unpredictability to them, and honestly, that is part of what makes them so much fun.
The beaches in Rodanthe are perfect for relaxed Outer Banks dog photography sessions. The softer atmosphere on Hatteras Island gives sessions a peaceful feel that works beautifully for both families and pets. Add in the soft pastel skies during Magic Hour and the rolling surf in the background, and it creates the kind of environment where natural moments happen effortlessly.
One of my favorite images from the evening was watching everyone simply sitting together facing the ocean. No posing. No pressure. Just a quiet moment shared between family members and dogs who have clearly spent years together making memories. Those are the kinds of photographs that end up meaning the most over time.
As an Outer Banks photographer, I always encourage families to include their dogs in their beach portraits whenever possible. Pets are family too, and they deserve to be part of the memories. Whether it is a playful puppy racing through the sand or an older dog enjoying a peaceful evening by the ocean, those moments become priceless photographs later on.
The Lacey Family session was a perfect reminder that family photography does not always have to be formal or complicated. Sometimes it is simply about documenting love, companionship, and a few wagging tails on the beaches of the Outer Banks.
Thank you again to the Lacey Family for trusting me with these memories down in Rodanthe. I had an amazing time photographing you all and your beautiful dogs on the beach. I hope these photographs always bring you right back to this quiet evening together on Hatteras Island.
