The Welch Family Photography - Three Generations on the Beaches of Hatteras Island

One of the things I enjoy most about photographing families on the Outer Banks is watching several generations come together for a week at the beach. The Welch family met me on the beaches of Hatteras Island for an evening session that was full of laughter, hugs, and plenty of personality.

With grandparents, grown children, spouses, and five energetic grandkids, there was never a dull moment. We started with the full family portraits before breaking into each individual family, grandparents with the grandchildren, sibling groups, and a few fun combinations that everyone enjoyed.

One of my favorite moments came when we were photographing Grandpa with all of his grandchildren. It took a little convincing, but once we got him smiling, everyone else relaxed too. That genuine smile turned into one of my favorite images from the evening, and the kids loved piling in close for a big family hug.

As the sun got lower, we made our way down to the shoreline for a few playful portraits. The brothers couldn't resist wrapping each other up in one giant bear hug, the sisters shared plenty of laughs, and everyone finished the evening simply enjoying being together by the ocean. Those unscripted moments are often the ones families treasure most years later.

Sessions like this are a great reminder that family photography is about much more than creating a Christmas card. It's about preserving a season of life that changes far too quickly. The youngest grandchildren will be running circles around everyone before long, and these photographs become a way to remember exactly what this summer together felt like.
