Summer on the Outer Banks can be absolutely beautiful, but sometimes it can also be incredibly hot. The Hachey Family found that out firsthand during their recent family photography session in Kill Devil Hills.
We met for a 5 PM session with a group of fifteen family members spread across three generations. The family included proud grandparents, their three sons, and each of their growing families. Altogether there were seven energetic grandchildren, which always guarantees plenty of laughs and activity during a photo session.
Despite the heat, everyone showed up ready to go. We started with the large family portraits before working through the various combinations that make a multi-generational family session so special. Grandparents with grandchildren, individual family groups, cousins together, siblings together, and every combination in between. One of the things I love about larger family sessions is capturing not only the formal portraits, but also the relationships that make each family unique.
The grandchildren were especially fun to photograph. Whether they were piling into grandparents' laps, squeezing together for cousin photos, or showing off their personalities in front of the camera, they kept the energy level high throughout the evening. Looking at the cousin portraits, it is easy to see the friendships that are forming alongside the family bonds.
As warm as the evening was, everyone was a great sport. By the time we had finished the formal portraits, there was only one logical way to wrap up the session.
We headed for the water.
One of my favorite things about beach photography on the Outer Banks is that sometimes the best moments happen after everyone thinks the session is over. Shoes come off, schedules disappear, and families simply enjoy being together. The Hachey Family ended their evening splashing in the ocean, playing in the waves, and cooling off after a very warm afternoon on the beach.
Some of my favorite images from the session came during those final moments. Parents running into the surf with their children, kids laughing as the waves chased them, and family members simply enjoying a summer evening together on the shores of Kill Devil Hills. Those are the kinds of memories that make Outer Banks vacations so special.
Thank you to the Hachey Family for trusting me to capture another chapter of your family story. It was a pleasure spending the evening with all fifteen of you, and I hope the photographs help preserve these memories for years to come.
