The Gamble Family – Outer Banks Family Photography in Southern Shores

Some family sessions are about capturing everyone together. Others are about celebrating the generations that made it all possible. The Gamble Family's session in Nags Head was a little bit of both.

With 14 family members spanning multiple generations, we planned an earlier 4:45 PM session to make things easier on the family's youngest member, a sweet little great-grandson who quickly became one of the stars of the evening. While most of my summer sessions take place closer to sunset, it's always worth adjusting the schedule when it helps keep the little ones happy and comfortable.

We started with the full family portraits before breaking into smaller groups. The grandparents enjoyed time with their children and grandchildren, siblings laughed their way through their portraits, and the great-grandson made his way from one set of loving arms to another. One thing that stood out throughout the session was how much fun this family has together. There was plenty of joking, teasing, and laughter between photos, which always makes for genuine smiles.

I especially enjoyed capturing the different family groups along the beach and in the dunes. The soft light, sea oats, and rolling waves provided a beautiful Outer Banks backdrop while allowing each family unit to have portraits of their own. We even squeezed in a few senior-style portraits that looked straight out of a magazine.

One of my favorite moments came when the original siblings got into some playful affection during a portrait and reminded mom of all the roughhousing when they were younger. The resulting laughter was completely genuine and perfectly captured the personality of this family.
