The Mitchell Family – Taking Their Own Kind of Shots in Kitty Hawk

I recently met the Mitchell Family in Kitty Hawk for an evening session just a couple of miles from my house. With 14 family members, including grandparents, three family groups, and six grandkids, there was plenty of laughter and energy to go around.

The timing of the session added a little extra fun to the evening. Grandpa was hoping to get home in time for the NBA Finals, but before watching the pros take their shots, he made sure to take some important shots of his own with the people who matter most.

What I loved most about this session was how much fun everyone had together. The cousins were constantly joking around, siblings were picking on each other in the best way possible, and everyone seemed genuinely happy to be spending time together. Those natural interactions always create some of my favorite photographs.

This session also gave us the chance to celebrate a couple of exciting milestones. The oldest granddaughter is preparing to graduate, so we created a series of senior portraits to mark this special season of life. We also spent some time with her brother, an aspiring musician who wanted updated portraits for promotional materials. Both of them brought their own personality to the session and made the most of the beautiful Outer Banks backdrop.

The soft evening light and pastel skies gave us wonderful conditions for family portraits, individual images, and plenty of candid moments along the shoreline. By the end of the evening, Grandpa still had a chance to catch the game, and the family left with memories that will last much longer than the final score.

Multi-generational sessions like this are always a reminder of how important it is to capture these moments while everyone is together. The years move quickly, but photographs have a way of helping us hold onto them.
