The Rispoli Family – A Surprise Proposal at Coquina Beach

One of the things I love most about being an Outer Banks family photographer is that no two sessions are ever quite the same. Sometimes it’s all about gathering the family together for updated portraits, and sometimes there’s a surprise waiting that only a few people know about.

The Rispoli Family session at Coquina Beach was a little bit of both.

I had photographed one side of this family before, so it was great to reconnect and meet the rest of the family during their Outer Banks vacation. We met at Coquina Beach during magic hour, when the soft evening light and pastel skies create some of my favorite conditions for family photography on the OBX.

With multiple generations together, we worked through the family portraits first, making sure we captured grandparents, individual families, siblings, couples, and plenty of candid moments along the way. Everyone was relaxed, easygoing, and clearly enjoying the chance to spend time together near the ocean.

As the session continued, there was a little extra excitement in the air that most of the group knew about... except for one person.

What started as a family portrait session suddenly became something much bigger when a surprise proposal unfolded on the beach.

The timing could not have been better. The sky was glowing with soft colors, the waves were rolling onto the shore, and family members watched as one unforgettable question was asked. Judging by the smile that followed, the answer was exactly what everyone hoped it would be.

Moments like these are impossible to plan perfectly, but somehow they always seem to happen at exactly the right time.

After the excitement settled down, we captured engagement photos, family celebrations, and plenty of laughter as everyone soaked in what had just happened. Those are the kinds of images that become even more meaningful years down the road because they tell the story of a day that nobody will ever forget.

The Rispoli Family came to Coquina Beach expecting family photos. They left with family photos and the beginning of a brand-new chapter.
