The Johnson Family - Three Generations at Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills

One of the things I enjoy most about photographing families on the Outer Banks is watching three generations come together to enjoy a week at the beach. The Johnson family gathered at Avalon Pier in Kill Devil Hills for their family portrait session, bringing together Grandma and Grandpa, their three sons, and the oldest son's wife and young son for a wonderful evening of memories on the beach.

Because this was one of my earlier sessions of the day, the summer sun was still sitting fairly high in the sky. Fortunately, Avalon Pier offers one of my favorite hidden advantages for beach photography. We spent a good portion of the session underneath the pier where the shade provided beautiful, soft light while also giving everyone a chance to stay cool and comfortable. It is one of the reasons Avalon Pier is such a fantastic location for family portraits, especially during the warmer months.

The Johnson family was wonderful to work with. We photographed the entire extended family together before breaking into each individual family, the grandparents with their children, Grandma and Grandpa with their grandson, the three brothers together, and plenty of other combinations that will allow everyone to remember this vacation for years to come.

One of my favorite moments came when the youngest member of the family simply enjoyed being himself. His bright smile, endless curiosity, and playful personality brought so much energy to the session. Whether he was exploring under the pier or splashing in the waves with his parents near the end of the evening, he reminded everyone that some of the best family memories happen in the simplest moments.

As the light softened later in the session, we stepped back out onto the beach for a few more portraits before finishing along the shoreline. The combination of the ocean, the iconic Avalon Pier, and three generations spending time together created the perfect backdrop for photographs that I hope the Johnson family will treasure for many years.
