The LaJoie Family - A Bright Afternoon in Hatteras Village

Sometimes the schedule does not cooperate, and that was the case for the LaJoie family. We had to move their session from Sunday to Wednesday, which put us on the beach at three p.m. in Hatteras Village. The light was certainly bright, but we worked through it and created a beautiful set of portraits at LaJoie’s Lookout.

With six family members together, we captured the full group, smaller combinations, individual portraits, and plenty of personality along the way. Their light blues and whites looked perfect against the waves, sand, and big summer sky.

I especially enjoyed photographing the family at their house, LaJoie’s Lookout, before heading down to the beach. It gave the session an added sense of place, then the ocean gave us the classic Hatteras Village backdrop that makes these family vacations so memorable.

A three o’clock session can present a challenge, but it is a good reminder that family portraits do not depend on perfect conditions. A little flexibility, a good attitude, and a family that is ready to enjoy the experience can make all the difference.
