The Rohwedder Family – Beating the Weather in Nags Head

One thing I've learned as an Outer Banks family photographer is that summer weather forecasts are often more of a suggestion than a guarantee. The Rohwedder Family's session in Nags Head was a perfect example.

With rain moving into the forecast, we decided to move their session up to 12:30 in the afternoon to make sure we could fit everything in before the weather arrived. Midday beach sessions can sometimes be challenging, but this day rewarded us with beautiful skies, rolling waves, and plenty of smiles.

The Rohwedder Family brought an incredible energy to the beach from the moment we started. Between the grandparents, parents, and grandchildren, there was no shortage of laughter, hugs, and playful moments. Some of my favorite images came from the candid interactions that happened between poses, the moments that truly show a family's personality.

The grandkids were especially fun to photograph. Whether they were laughing together, wrapping their arms around their grandparents, or jumping for the camera, they brought so much life to the session. Those natural connections are what make family portraits feel meaningful years down the road.

I also loved the variety we were able to capture during our time together. We created classic family portraits along the shoreline, smaller family groupings in the dunes, and plenty of individual portraits that highlighted each person's unique personality. Even with the weather forcing us to adjust our plans, everything came together beautifully.

By the time we finished, the clouds were beginning to build again, reminding us why moving the session earlier had been the right call. Sometimes flexibility is the key to creating great family photographs on the Outer Banks.
